Are You Reaching Your True Potential?

Maslows Hierarchy of Needs

In 1943, an American psychologist by the name of Abraham Maslow came up with a concept, that our actions are motivated by certain needs. These begin with the basics such as food and shelter, and then progress onto more advanced needs.

This is one of the most popular concepts followed in the motivation world in todays day and age.

Maslow believes that humans have an ultimate goal to be self-actualized - to reach our ultimate potential. For this to happen we need to build from the bottom up and fulfil all the basics first.

Physiological:

  • Food

  • Water

  • Shelter

Safety:

  • Financial security

  • Health

  • Safe from harm

Love/ Belonging:

  • Friendships

  • Love

  • Relationships

  • Social groups

Esteem:

  • The need for appreciation

  • Respect

  • Feeling valued

Self-actualization:

  • Self aware

  • Concerned with personal growth

  • Less concerned with the opinions of others and wanting to reach your maximum potential

Food for thought: Where are you on this pyramid? What can you work on to be closer to self-actualization and peace?
